General Information
William Warren is a graduate of Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina where he drew the editorial cartoons and comic strips for The Old Gold and Black, the University's student newspaper. He majored in political science and minored in studio art. William has been drawing cartoons for his school newspaper since 5th grade and drew his first editorial cartoon in the 9th grade. Although a born and raised native of Atlanta, Georgia, William currently lives in Washington, DC. William is also a member of the AAEC, the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists.
Awards and Honors
William's cartoon "360 Degree Coverage" was selected for the back cover of the 2009 edition of "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year" by Pelican Publishing Company. Additionally, three other cartoons, "He Must Choose," "Man Behind the Candidate," and "Yalta 2008," were also selected for inclusion. The "Best Editorial Cartoons of the Year" book series has been in print since 1972 and is edited by Charles Brooks. The 2009 edition features over 400 editorial cartoons by 165 cartoonists. William was recently named the winner of the 2007 Society of Professional Journalists Mark of Excellence award for collegiate editorial cartooning for Region 2.
William was named the winner of the Charles M. Schulz Award, the Scripps Howard Foundation's National Journalism Award for college cartoonists. William won this contest with his Lummox comic strip entry. This is his second national award for his comic strip, which debuted fall of 2006. The award included a cash prize, a trophy, and an invitation to a special black-tie dinner at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C. in April of 2008. The dinner highlighted William's new award as well as other various professional journalism awards. William was named the 1st Place Winner of the 2007 Associated Collegiate Press award for best Comic Strip/Panel cartoon for his comic strip series Lummox. The contest was part of the nation-wide Associated Collegiate Press awards for college newspapers all across America. The Universal Press Syndicate, along with the ACP, sponsored the contest. In April of 2006, William placed first in the John Locher Memorial Cartoon Contest, considered by many to be the most prestigious contest for college editorial cartoonists in North America. For placing first, William was invited to attend the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists convention in Denver, Colorado this past June. In 2005, William placed third in the contest.

At the AAEC convention, William was able to meet professional cartoonists from all across the nation. William also had his work critiqued by a number of top cartoonists including Steve Sack, Michael Ramirez, and Matt Davies. Additionally, William attended workshops and panel discussions, all of which dealt with issues in editorial cartooning. William was also mentioned in Daryl Cagle's cartoon blog on Daryl Cagle's Professional Cartoonists Index (click here and scroll down to view the mention) and was featured in a video with Dick Locher (click here to view the video, recorded by Daryl Cagle at the 2006 convention).
In July of 2006, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution held a contest in which it asked readers to submit their own political cartoon while the staff cartoonist, Mike Luckovich, was on vacation. William won the contest with his cartoon entitled "Appropriate Ceasefire", beating out over 200 other cartoons. The cartoon was published in the newspaper on two occasions and was also featured on the Atlanta Journal-Constitution website. Click here to view the AJC article about the contest
Additional Information
William has also personally met and spent time with both Mike Luckovich, the cartoonist for the Atlanta Journal Constitution, and Rick McKee, the cartoonist for the Augusta Chronicle. In addition to these cartoonists, William also closely studies and admires the work of cartoonists Michael Ramirez of the Investors Business Daily, Jim Borgman of the Cincinnati Enquirer, and the long deceased Thomas Nast.
In addition to The Old Gold and Black, William also freelances his work out to various other newspapers and magazines.
